Heath Ledger Scares Movie Goers in Dark Knight

The Dark Knight opened up to a record box office total of just north of 158 million dollars. The movie is probably well on its way to being the #1 comic book movie money maker of all time. Heath Ledgers performance is breathtaking and leaves the audience screaming for more. Heath Ledger gives the Joker a very dark, and evil personality that for some is very frightening. Anytime someone comes to a haunted house patrons typically ask 'Please tell me you don't have any clowns'... people are scared of clowns. In the Dark Knight Heath Ledger isn't a Joker who has fallen into a vat of acid, he's a sadistic person who wears clown make up much like John Wayne Gacy.

In this version of the Batman saga, the escalation of what a criminal will do to stay in business comes full circle in the face of the Joker, hired by the mob to rub out Batman. The Joker finds fighting with Batman and causing pure chaos more fun than killing Batman or bringing order back to the thugs to hired him. The Joker just wants to watch the city burn for his own amusement. At one point Batman asks the Joker "Why do you want to kill me" and the Joker replies "I don't want to kill you, you are too much fun, you complete me'. Basically the Joker finds that without Batman life wouldn't be fun, and feels that both he and Batman or kindred spirits who need each other to give their life purpose. Batman finds he can't kill the Joker and the Joker discovers he can't kill Batman so both in their own twisted way may have discovered they are more alike than they may appear. They need each other to fill a very hollow void in their life.

Heath Ledger's Joker goes on a killing rampage, and will kill those close to Batman, innocent people but not Batman himself. In many ways the first Spiderman movie which tried to take the character and story developement of a comic book movie to a more series level probably led Warner Brothers to rethink how to reboot Batman. Nolan has taken what was attempted with Spiderman and taken it to a whole new level of storytelling, and maybe just maybe has finally done for comic book movies what Lord of the Rings did for action movies: DELIVER AN OSCAR!

Dark Knight is far more than a comic book movie, it is a crime drama in the same vein as the Godfather. In our opinion The Dark Knight has laid down a new path for all comic book movies to follow. The days of silly, over the top action are gone The Dark Knight just put all of Hollywood on notice that a comic book movie can be more, should be more, and can hold itself to higher standards.

Dark Knight should receive Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Script, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Director, and without a doubt Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger.

When it is all said and done, I look back on Dark Knight and come to one conclusion ... I hated The Dark Knight because I love Batman. Why did I hate this movie, when in fact I loved it more than any other comic book movie I've ever seen? I hated this movie for two reasons... one because Heath Ledger is gone, and now I can't imagine ANYONE ever playing The Joker again. Heath Ledger is the Joker, and what actor would ever want to step into those shoes? I can only imagine a few such as Johnny Depp, or maybe Javier Bardem but would they take the roll after what Heath Ledger has brought to the table? I doubt it!

Secondly and lastly, this movie was so good, I can't imagine Nolan making another one, and even if he did could Dark Knight ever be topped? What villains are left, who matches the chaos of the Joker? Mr. Freeze would be cool but he's somewhat campy, Riddler would be nice but that is again campy isn't it? This movie left nothing more for Batman ... and that makes it a sad day for a Batman fan, who wants to see 10 more Batman movies by Nolan and Nolan only.

Heath Ledger is gone and much like Brandon Lee will always be remembered as The Crow, Heath Ledger will always be The Joker!
